SU NICHOLS

Picture

Susan “Su” W. Nichols (b.1948) is a native of New York who became interested in art activities as a young child.  She explains, “I always liked doing artwork in elementary school, as well as with art classes in high school. I majored in Art Education, with an Anthropology minor, at SUNY New Paltz, taking classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, ceramics, art history, printmaking, and jewelry. After I graduated, I worked 2 years as an Art Teacher K-8 in Troy, NY, in three public schools. Then, I moved to Santa Rosa, CA, and worked in a furniture factory making “knockdown” furniture and learning the process of furniture framing, sanding, staining, upholstery, and sewing. I moved to Seminole, FL, and taught Art K-8 in a private school. I exhibited children’s artwork in St. Petersburg, FL, in several annual outdoor school art exhibits. I continued Art Education classes at the University of South Florida in Tampa, along with a workshop in Art Therapy. I married and moved to Gadsden, AL, in 1996 and have worked as a Case Manager for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities, graduating in 2008 from the University of Alabama with a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling.  I have been an active member of the Gadsden Art Association since 2003 and have held the positions of both Secretary and President. Presently, I am Secretary, helping out with the Juried Art Show. On my own, I have done mostly oil paintings of people and landscapes, abstracts, silkscreen and woodblock printmaking, batik, and weaving. I also was self-taught in black and white photography, taking photos of people and cityscapes and doing basic photo developing. Most recently, I created an acrylic painting as a way of participating during a worship church service at a local church.”
