Why join the Gadsden Art Association?
Sixty years ago artists in the Gadsden area banded together to promote the visual arts. Their goal was to provide a place for artists to work together, exhibit their artworks, and promote art education. Because of their pioneering efforts our community has an active arts organization, an art museum and a yearly juried show. The permanent collection of the Gadsden Museum of Art holds paintings by decades of art association members. Become part of this tradition by joining the Gadsden Art Association!
Monthly meetings offer members a chance to share experiences and network about galleries and other exhibition opportunities. Each meeting features an educational program on marketing and the business of art, techniques and media, or inspiring looks at today’s artists or sweep of art history. Mark your calendar for the fourth Tuesday of every month. Meetings are held in the art studio (2nd floor) of Cultural Arts (corner of Broad and 5th Street) at 6:30—a perfect opportunity for a private view of the current exhibitions!
The annual juried show is the highlight of the art association calendar. Members plan the show, served as jury members, select the show judge, coordinate all the activities, and provide hospitality for the artists and guests at the opening. From the Call to Artists to the opening reception to close of show many opportunities exist to participate in shaping this year’s show.
The 2018 Southeastern Plein Air Invitational draws artists from Texas to South Carolina, Kentucky to Florida, to paint on location in Gadsden for a week. Watching these professional painters in action is an education in composition, color, and skill! Gadsden Art Association members have special access to meet and talk with these artists at a potluck luncheon held during the event. The event concludes with an opening reception and an exhibition.
The Gadsden Art Association will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of its founding in 2018! Plans are underway for a year-long salute to the association and its members past and present including art workshops. Make your own mark on history by planning and participating in this year-long event.
